CMYK Book by DC Photographer Rick McCleary

March 2nd, 2010 No comments

dc_photographers_cmyk_2_0Long time friend and DC Photographer, Rick McCleary, has published a book: CMYK 2.0, A cooperative Workflow for Photographers, Designers, and Printers. When I worked on standards and practices for the photography industry, I always felt it was noble work because it would make the world a more beautiful place.  If  photographers could get their images out to the world the way they were intended to be viewed, then magazines, books, and even newspapers would be more beautiful.

No one is more passionate about printing CMYK correctly than DC photographer Rick McCleary.  Rick has worked with local DC printers and prepress houses to color manage the RGB to CMYK process that photographers and designers need to use to get it printed right.   Rick is active in the DC  Photographers scene; he is a board member of ASMP-DC.

The book starts out with an overview of the problems associated with digital photography workflow and CMYK printing.  It then moves on to proposed solutions and ends with technical details of the processes involved in converting images to CMYK.  The book has nicely printed images with deep and rich blacks; showing that Rick can practice what he preaches.   I think Rick has hit the mark with this book and I hope photographers, designers, and printers use this as a reference.  I think every copy sold will make the world a more beautiful place, thanks Rick.

ASMP DC’s 8X10(8 Photographers-10 Min Each)

I’m happy to see one of my ASMP presentation ideas come to life.  Way back when I was president of ASMP, and we were planning presentations for the year, I had the idea to let a bunch of photographers show their work and talk about it for 10 minutes each.  The idea didn’t make the cut that year, but last year the idea came to life as “10X10″: 10 Photographers for 10 min each.  Unfortunately photographers are long winded and the show was went a bit  long.  For this year, the brilliant ASMP board has renamed it 8X10.  Good job ASMP-DC board of directors and volunteers.

I would still love to see one of my other programs come to life:  an ASMP Buy Sell Trade day.  Just like the camera traders do on occasion: rent a hotel conference room with tables for a  Saturday; each photographer can rent a table to display their old gear for sale.   The event needs to be marketed through camera clubs and stores.  DC-Phtoographers-Resource is happy to help set this up if there is any interest.

Blake Discher Lecture at Glen Echo

September 7th, 2009 No comments

Photographer and educator Blake J. Discher of Firefly Studios, LLC in Detroit, Michigan. I’ve had many occasions over the years to spend time with Blake and hear him lecture on search engine positioning and business practice. He’s excellent!  He understands the business at a profound level and can convey that information articulately.  Blake’s fireflystudions.com website has been the top Google position for “Detroit Photographers” for as long as I’ve known him. He’s speaking for ASMP DC on Negotiating:

ASMP DC Host’s Cocktails at Perry’s

May 29th, 2009 No comments

asmp_dc_perrys.jpg

June 9, 2009 7-9 (and usually an after party)

Perry’s
Adams Morgan
1811 Columbia Rd
Washington DC, 2009

The American Society of Media Photographers DC Chapter is hosting it’s annual end of the season cocktail party. This is a good oportunity for Professional photographers to bond and get the inside scoop on what’s happening on the DC pro photography scene. It’s amazing that the best technical programs on digital imaging, business, and marketing draw fewer photographers than the cocktail parties. I’m not sure what that says about professional photographers, but it does make for a lively party. It would be nice to get some Art Buyers to attend; what an opportunity to get to know the pro’s in a relaxed setting before calling in their books.
